Returning home to AUArts

It has been almost 10 years since I graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD). To this day it still feels like home, with it's hodge podge of funky corridors, knooks, colours and mishmash of signage - it's a place I practically lived at for 4 years and each space feels familiar due to our foundational first year where you take classes located in studios all over the school. This past February the college gained University status and was renamed the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) through an in-depth process with Stormy Lake Consulting and the creative agency Will out of Vancouver.

Everyone who attended school here has a special connection. Many went on to other professions outside of the arts or design communities but each of us share a common work ethic and creative problem solving abilities that the school instills. So earlier this year a LinkedIn post caught my eye, AUArts was looking for freelancers to round out an internal team and help create additional branding items, building on Will's initial strategic brand foundation. I jumped at the opportunity to work with the school that provided me with the education that I highly value. And since March of 2019 I have had the pleasure of executing on a number of projects such as the 2019 Convocation materials, signage applications, the 2019/20 viewbook (seen above), advertising and a wayfinding program for the school in collaboration with Susan Zebedee.

Q&A with Susan Zebedee

Design & Communications | SZ Studio

This month's Q&A is with the talented Susan Zebedee! Susan is one of the many wonderful people that I met while working with the Alberta University of the Arts. I always learn something special in these Q&As that make me appreciate each person more - Susan and I both share the line of thought that a good idea can come from anyone - regardless of if they are a "creative" or not. Sharing this approach is probably just one of the reasons we enjoyed working with each other. And after reading this Q&A, I'm sure you'll want to work with Susan too :)
